This hand forged stylised snail makes for a unique gift or ornament for the house or garden. The forging process and handmade nature gives each snail a slightly different character, making each one truly unique. They make for a fun little gift or conversation piece showing what a blacksmith can do with their craft using traditional techniques.

The snail is handmade from a single piece of 12mm diameter steel bar. The steel is heated in the forge and is tapered at one end before being scrolled by hand to form the shell. The head and body is formed by splitting the opposite end of the bar in two using a chisel before forging the two ends into the eyes. Finally, the body is formed by folding the bar back onto itself before hammering it flat.

The snail is wire brushed, allowed to cool and is finished with a coating of clear lacquer or a traditional beeswax.

All of my items are hand made to order using traditional techniques and tools and, as such, there may be minor differences in the surface texture and finish between the items pictured here and subsequent pieces.

Note: The snails are protected with a clear lacquer and/or beeswax but they will eventually rust if left outdoors. However, this does create a fantastic patina which looks great in the garden amongst the flowers, in a window box or in the corner of the patio amongst the flower pots.
